Letter from Pastor Phil

March 18, 2020

Dear Church Family,

What attitude should we have in these times?  James says it well, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” - James 1:2-4.  We must overcome our fear. Hear the Angelic visitors throughout the Bible, and Jesus himself said to you, Fear Not. Trust in Jesus and allow him to use you during this time.

I am writing to keep you informed of the steps we are taking to slow the spread of this virus and protect those in our church:

1. We must gather accurate and helpful information.  Because of this information and these concerns, we are canceling all services here at New Prospect. We plan to reopen on March 31. We will reassess by March 29 and decide then if we can open or must remain closed. Social distancing is the right thing to do at this time.  We will not have any services, meetings, or circle meetings.

We are working on the ways to stream the service.  RightNow Media is available; send us an email to get you started. The Bible Project is a great web site for content to help you grow spiritually. FBC Spartanburg and others are on TV and many other church services are online.

2. I will be available any time by phone, text, and email, as always (864-871-0543). Jeri Lynn can be reached during regular office hours (8:00-5:00) at 864-682-3949.

3. Pastoral care will move to a phone-based system. I will not make personal visits unless you or your family ask me to come or you have an emergency. I am praying that you will begin a card and letter-writing campaign, and all members will call one another often. Call your Sunday School Class members, Circle members, and call your neighbors and check on them. Let us be Christ during this trying time.

4. We will be very frugal during this time. We encourage you to give to the best of your ability. Give through the mail; our address is New Prospect Baptist Church, 4996 HWY 221 S Laurens, SC 29360. We are hoping to have online giving set up very soon, and we will let you know how to use it. Thanks for giving your tithe during this trying time. Our needs still occur even if we do not meet.

5. I want to challenge you if you are healthy and not an at-risk person to make yourself available to help those who are at risk. We can pick up and deliver groceries and medicines and other supplies to help those who cannot get out themselves. Be open to the needs of neighbors and family and folks in our church. If you need help with securing supplies, contact Jeri Lynn or Phil on their cell phones, and they will secure help for you. If you are healthy and not at risk and would like to help in this process, let us know.

Those of you who were children during WWII understand sacrifice, and this is another time of great sacrifice. You need to help us understand what sacrifice looks like because we have not had to do that much lately. Our ordinary lives are not so ordinary anymore. We can get upset or worried, we can try to find someone to blame, or we can do what we should do. Stay at home and keep your distance. Pray! Pray! Pray! Read your bible; study God’s word. Spend time with your family, worship together.  Help those who are in need. Call and love people in new and very different ways.

Remember what Paul says in Philippians 4:  Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

May God Bless You with Good Health and Opportunity to be Light and Salt,
